Stan thanks for asking us our opinion. First things first....yes they're loud...but isn't that why you are buying them in the first place? They're supposed to be loud.... j/k. I personally like loud pipes but some don't so you are wise to consider carefully. Too loud though is very subjective from person to person.
In my experience Vance and Hines pipes tend to be just a skitch louder than a typical HD exhaust pipe and some LOVE them for that. I think the best way to decide is to hear them for yourself so I found this video of an FXST with the Big Radius on it. I wonder if I should have done that for you, cause I think they sound great and I haven't changed the pipes on my bike in at least 6 months.
