Old School Exhaust for Harley Davidson Road King?
I just bought an 04 Road King and I am in love with the bike....well everything except the exhaust. I am not looking for a pipe that will split my ear drums but I want to be able to hear the bike is running. Something with a little bit of a rumble.
In fact I want a pipe that will give a bit of an "old school rumble" again, not too loud but loud enough that it sounds right.
What would you recommend for my Harley Davidson Road King?
Our Answer
Roy first thanks for asking us our opinion about your Harley Davidson exhaust selection. The good news is that you have an almost unlimited choice in pipes. The Road Kings are immensely popular and all of the major pipe manufacturers are making systems targeted at your selection.
I don't know exactly how old school you want to go but nothing (to me) is more old school than a classic set of "fishtails" on a classic style Harley Davidson such as yours. A number of companies make Fishtail mufflers so you have a choice but I have a friend who has a set of Samson Fishtails on his bike and he loves em. They sound great and they look super cool on his old school ride.

We run Screaming Eagles…….. just enough to sound like the old time Harley, quiet enough not to break any noise ordinances

I have to agree that Fishtails are way cool on an old school type ride. I dig em. Samson is a straight up company with a decent reputation too.

now theres a can of worms. everybody has a favorite, for me, it’s vance and hines. Is your bike injected? I can’t remember on ‘04, If so, have you changed the air cleaner to the SE stage 1 kit yet? you should. Then if you go SE pipes and do the download, you will pick up a couple of MPG and a better rpm on the highwaywith a few more hp as well. . But the sound is so so. Vance and Hines are great sounding, but so are hooker, Rhienhold and a lot of others. Again though, if you change just the pipes (slip ons) you may be able to get away without remapping the injection. Not always though. And, like I said, you should change to a better air filter system (high volume) to get the full benefit of hp increase and mpg. Then comes the big costs. Harley will try to sell you a race tuner for up to $400.00 and 5 hours of dyno and set up at $90.00 per hr. Or, you can order the V&H pipes and one of their fuel paks. Install the pipes yourself, hook in the fuel pak, call V&H at their 800 number, tell em what bike and what pipes you put on, they will give you the proper code to punch into the fuel pak and away you go. It remaps the injection for you. No cost for dyno etc from HD. I did Screaming eagles on my ‘05 electra glide classic, didn’t care for the sound, it was louder, but tinny. I did Rhienhards on my ‘06 Dyna wide glide and it was great, but I fell for the HD line about the race tuner. On my 84 wide glide, I went to shotgun pipes by V&H and loved em ( it was carburated) on my new ‘07 ultra glide, I’m gonna go with V&H slip ons with the fuel pak.

I like Vance and Hines and Hooker, both perform well and look nice.
If you are about performance only and don’t really care about looks, Thunder Header or D+D.
Fishtails are kinda cool on a RK.
