I bought a used Nightrain last month and I need some help. I want to know if my bike has a Stage 1 kit on it or not and I don't know how to tell. I am not even quite sure that I know what a Stage 1 Kit consists of.
If it helps my Nightrain can do 110 mph in 4th gear and 120 mph in 5th gear before the rev limiter kicks in but I don't want to push that any farther.
Our Answer
Thanks for the question and congratulations on the new Nightrain....they are great bikes and I have one myself.....so good on you.
As for your question, a Stage 1 upgrade for a Harley Davidson typically consists of three things, an exhaust upgrade, an air cleaner upgrade and either a rejet of the carb or a reflash of the PCM depending on the bike. So to check if you have a Stage 1 upgrade installed on your bike, these are what you look to find. The actual mile per hour ratings will not tell you anything.
So if your bike has pipes and a non-stock air cleaner or filter assembly (usually K&N) then you have already been upgraded to Stage 1. To get much more power out of the combination, you will need to go into the engine, which most are not willing to do.
If we can help...feel free to ask.

Speed probably won’t tell anyone a thing. Check the air filter, if it is a K&N and you have after market pipes on it, you might have the stage one kit. The best way to check is to have a mechanic scan the onboard computer. If it was done right the computer tell you. You might check with your local dealer and ask them to look up records on the bike to see. I’ve included a link to the H-D park site for the stage one kit. Scroll down to 29489-99C
first will be the obvious. is your air cleaner visible from the back of the air can? or does it have a black plastic rear cover? then you can look at your pipes, are they quiet like a honda pipe or do they sound pretty noisy? as far as the stage one in your ecm its will be hard to tell unless you have a afr sniffer or digitech. the speed of y our bike is not going to tell you anything. your rev limiter is set at approx 5200 rpm before the stg one. if you are not going to go to the shop to find out and just ride the bike the rev limiter on a stg one will be up to approx 6200 rpm. but remember to check the obvious first if the air can and pipes are different from stock then you probably have a stage one.
