Thundermax FAQ

1. How do I learn to use the software outside of the quick start installation manual?
You can download a complete user manual from the Manuals section of www.Thunder-Max.com, and from the Help toolbar in your SmartLink Software (version 2007.0.10 and up). This complete user manual includes full color images and a comprehensive explenation of all software functions.
2. Will my factory H-D alarm system work with ThunderMax?
Yes.

3. I just changed my exhaust system, will I need to download a new map?
Generally speaking, no. In most cases, ThunderMax will auto tune (if equipped) the map points in several road tests. It may be that the signature of the pressure wave (the new exhaust system) may be so different from your base map that learning will take more time. If this is the case, select another map with the style of pipe you have installed from your SmartLink software. Ie: 2 into 1, Duals, ECT.
5. When selecting a base a map, is it important for parts listed to exactly match brand names of parts on my bike?
No. One of the most important factors is getting the fuel pulse in range when selecting a map. Effort should be put forth in matching throttle body and injector size. Exhaust pipe styling, make and model are secondary. ThunderMax with Auto Tune will effectively adjust map points to stabilize your AFR after installation.

6. I can’t decide whether to purchase a Race Tuner (which my dealer informs me requires dyno tuning) or have a ThunderMax with AutoTune installed. Both look similar in overall cost, so please define the difference.
The key that sets the ThunderMax system apart is the wide band, auto tuning function. Every throttle position, RPM and spark plug cycle is constantly read, then corrected in real time. Regardless of changes in ambient riding conditions or altitude, you are provided with an excellent tune. Your ride is gauranteed outstanding performance, whether at the top of the mountain, the seashore, or during any season of the year.

7. How do I adapt an open loop ThunderMax to the closed loop AutoTune module on my motorcycle?
This is a simple 1-2-3 procedure:

1. If needed, add two (2) bungs to your head pipes and install o2 sensors

2. Make sure your module has the most current firmware, update if needed

3. Plug the AutoTune module in the data port and check the closed loop processing boxes in the software

8. Is Smartlink software compatible with Microsoft Vista? Windows 98?
Yes, Smartlink software is compatible with Microsoft Vista. The current version of SmartLink will not support Windows 98.

9. I have a Closed Loop ThunderMax and I want to improve fuel mileage. What are my options?
All maps for 2006 and earlier engines have closed loop target defaults set at 13.0 for all throttle positions. Adjusting the targets to improve mileage in the "AFR vs. TPS @ rpm" pages is a simple task which is covered in the current operation manual. You need to modify only one map page, starting with the 768 RPMs and you can paste them to 3328 RPMs (recommended). As examples, you can view multi-tiered map pages for 07-08 models in the SmartLink software. These maps will yield excellent results for fuel economy.
